Translate from the screenshot screen
On supported iPhones, you can translate recognized text before you save the screenshot.
- Press the side button and volume up button together.
- Use the translation or visual intelligence controls that appear with the screenshot when text is recognized.
- Read the translation, then close the screenshot if you do not want to keep it.
On Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhones, iOS 26 also adds Visual Intelligence for content already on your screen. Apple exposes those tools from the same screenshot gesture.

Translate a saved screenshot in Photos
If the screenshot is already in your photo library, open it in Photos. When iPhone recognizes text in the image, use Live Text to select the text and choose Translate.
This works well when you only care about one line, a button label, an address, or another small part of the screenshot. You can select the exact text instead of translating the whole image.

Use the Translate app for the whole image
Apple Translate can also work from a photo in your library. Open Translate, go to the camera view, choose the Photo Library button, then select the screenshot.
This route is useful when you want the translation attached to the image instead of selecting individual text in Photos.

Which screenshot method should you use?
| Situation | Best first option |
|---|---|
| You just took the screenshot | Use the screenshot translation controls |
| You only need one line from a saved image | Photos and Live Text |
| You want to translate the image in Apple Translate | Translate app and Photo Library |
| You keep translating screens inside another app | A trigger-based screen translator |
Why screenshots become slow when you need several translations
A screenshot is fine when the job ends after one image. Repeated translation adds the same steps each time: capture the screen, use the translation controls, close the screenshot, return to the app, then do it again on the next screen.
That can happen quickly in a foreign shopping app, a game, a booking flow, or a local service app where every new screen has different text.
Translate the screen without managing screenshots yourself
Onscreen Translate is built for that repeated case. You can assign it to Double Tap, Triple Tap, or the Action Button, then trigger the translation from the screen you are already viewing.
The normal workflow does not make you save screenshots to Photos, reopen them, or clean them up later. Onscreen Translate handles one screen at a time, so it is different from a continuous live translation overlay.
Keep the layout when the position of text matters
A screenshot often contains more than words. The position of a price, menu item, button, warning, or label tells you what the translation belongs to.
Onscreen Translate is designed to keep the translated result close to the original screen structure, including placement, colors, and visual hierarchy. That is useful when a detached list of translated text would be harder to match back to the interface.
Can iPhone translate a screenshot?
Yes. On supported iPhones, the screenshot screen can offer translation controls when text is recognized. You can also translate text from a saved screenshot in Photos or choose the screenshot from the Translate app.
Can I translate a screenshot without saving it to Photos?
Yes. On supported iPhones, you can use translation or visual intelligence controls from the screenshot screen, then close the screenshot instead of saving it.
What if I need to translate many screens in a row?
The built-in screenshot tools work well for occasional translations. If you keep translating screens inside another app, a trigger-based screen translator can remove the repeated screenshot, open, translate, close, and return routine.
Does Onscreen Translate require me to save screenshots?
No. The normal Onscreen Translate workflow does not require you to save and manage screenshots yourself. You trigger the translation from the screen you are already viewing.
