For one screen, use the tools already on your iPhone
Press the side button and volume up together. In the screenshot view, tap Translate when iPhone recognizes text. Close the screenshot when you are done.
On Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhones, the same screenshot view also includes Visual Intelligence tools for onscreen content.
This is a good option when you only need to understand one screen and do not mind using the screenshot controls.

Why the screenshot routine gets old fast
Repeated screen translation turns into the same sequence: capture the screen, open the translation controls, read the result, close the screenshot, return to the app, then repeat it on the next screen.
That is manageable once. It gets annoying when you are moving through a shopping app, local service app, or several untranslated menus.
Use a trigger instead
Onscreen Translate can be assigned to Double Tap, Triple Tap, or the Action Button. Once it is set up, use the trigger from the screen you want to read.
You do not have to manually take a screenshot, save it to Photos, reopen it in another translator, and delete it later.
Does Onscreen Translate use a screen capture?
The user-facing workflow does not require you to manage screenshots. The shortcut may capture the current screen as part of the translation workflow. The useful difference is that you stay focused on the app you are using instead of managing image files yourself.
Back Tap is buried in iPhone Settings
Normally, you have to work through several Settings menus to assign Back Tap. Onscreen Translate takes you to the relevant setting after you choose Double Tap, Triple Tap, or the Action Button.

Which option makes sense?
| Situation | Best first option |
|---|---|
| One screenshot or image | iPhone screenshot translation |
| Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone and one onscreen lookup | Visual Intelligence |
| Repeated screens inside apps | A trigger-based screen translator |
| Moving subtitles or continuous scrolling | A continuous translation tool |
What Onscreen Translate does differently
The translated result is designed to keep the screen's layout and visual structure. That matters on screens full of buttons, cards, product options, and labels where a separate block of translated text is hard to map back to the interface.
Can iPhone translate the current screen?
Yes. iPhone can translate text from the screenshot interface, and Apple Intelligence-compatible models add Visual Intelligence for onscreen content. Onscreen Translate is another option when you want a repeatable trigger from the app you are already using.
Can I translate without saving screenshots to Photos?
Yes. Apple's screenshot interface can be closed without keeping the screenshot. Onscreen Translate also removes the need to manually take, reopen, and clean up screenshots during a normal translation workflow.
Does Onscreen Translate translate continuously?
No. It translates the current screen when you trigger it. It is built for screen-by-screen translation, not continuous translation while you scroll or watch video.
