1. The gesture does not start translation
For Back Tap, check Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap and confirm the correct Double Tap or Triple Tap assignment. For an Action Button, check Settings → Action Button → Shortcut and confirm the shortcut added through Onscreen Translate’s Magic Tap setup.
Run that shortcut directly from Shortcuts. If it works there, revisit the gesture assignment. If it fails there too, reopen Magic Tap setup and complete any permission prompts. Assigning the ordinary Screenshot action only captures an image; it does not run the translation workflow.
Follow the full Back Tap guide or Action Button guide if setup is incomplete.
2. The app opens instead of showing a background preview
Check your iOS version under Settings → General → About. Onscreen Translate requires iOS 18.4 or later. Background screenshot previews require iOS 26 or later; earlier supported versions open the app. Opening the app on an earlier supported version does not by itself mean the shortcut is broken.
3. The captured screen is wrong or incomplete
Open the exact screen you want to read and wait for loading, scrolling, or transitions to finish before triggering translation. A screenshot only contains the visible area at the time of capture. It cannot include text farther down a page or behind a closed menu.
If the captured content is blank or unavailable, try a simple non-sensitive screen to see whether the issue is specific to that content. Some content may restrict capture. Do not assume the translator can recover text absent from the captured image.
4. The words were not recognized correctly
Text recognition has to identify the characters before translation can interpret them. Tiny labels, stylized game fonts, low contrast, blur, and busy backgrounds can produce missing or incorrect characters.
- Open a product image at full size instead of translating its thumbnail.
- Increase the app’s text size or zoom where the app supports it.
- Wait for a dialogue animation to finish, or pause moving content.
- Translate a smaller, clearer section rather than a dense screen full of unrelated text.
If a language has similar-looking characters, one recognition error can change the meaning substantially. Compare the original text with the result before relying on a short label.
5. The translation is in the wrong language or sounds odd
Check the target language selected in Onscreen Translate. Mixed-language screens, abbreviations, usernames, slang, and short game terms can lack enough context for a reliable translation.
Try capturing a complete sentence or a screen that includes the heading and surrounding text. Keep brand names, item codes, addresses, and numbers visible in the original so you can compare them. A fluent speaker or the app’s official localized content can help resolve an ambiguous phrase.
6. The translated layout is hard to follow
A translated phrase can be longer than the original. Dense menus, tiny buttons, overlapping text, and decorative backgrounds make layout preservation harder. Treat the result as a reference image and return to the original app to interact.
When a button is unclear, translate a screen where that button is larger or separated from nearby labels. Do not infer a destructive action from a partial translation. For checkout screens, compare amounts and selected options with the original.
7. A translation fails after setup worked
Some translations use online processing, so check your connection and try again with a short, clear screen. Reopen the app and check its current status or any displayed error. Avoid repeatedly retrying a sensitive screenshot while diagnosing the problem.
If the issue persists, contact support with your iPhone model, iOS version, the step that fails, and the error message. Share a redacted example only if needed; remove private messages and account details first.
Know the expected behavior
Onscreen Translate works on captured screens, one trigger at a time. It does not continuously update as you scroll, replace another app’s interface language, or make the translated image’s buttons interactive. See which translation method fits your task if you need a different workflow.
Try Onscreen Translate
Translate a captured screen with a quick trigger and read the result in its original visual structure.
