What Back Tap does, and what the translator does

Back Tap is an iPhone accessibility feature that runs an action when you tap the back of the phone two or three times. It does not translate text on its own. Onscreen Translate supplies the translation workflow: capture the current screen, recognize its text, translate it, and render a translated image that follows the original layout.

This is useful for app buttons, product images, menus, and messages that cannot be selected. It translates a captured screen on demand. It does not continuously translate an app as you scroll.

Set up Back Tap for screen translation

  1. Download and open Onscreen Translate on an iPhone running iOS 18.4 or later.
  2. Follow the app’s Magic Tap setup and add its shortcut. Complete any permission prompts shown during setup.
  3. Open Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Back Tap.
  4. Choose Double Tap or Triple Tap. Select the translation shortcut you added, rather than the ordinary Screenshot action.
  5. Open a screen with clear, non-sensitive text. Wait for the screen to stop moving, then tap the back of the iPhone using the gesture you assigned.
  6. Read the translated result, then return to the original app to continue.

Apple documents the Back Tap settings and gestures in Use Back Tap on your iPhone. The translation shortcut is provided by Onscreen Translate.

Which gesture should you choose?

Choose Double Tap if that is the gesture you find easiest to repeat. Choose Triple Tap if Double Tap already runs another action, or if you want translation to use a more deliberate gesture. You can keep a different action assigned to the other gesture.

Try it while holding your phone the way you normally read an app. A short practice run is more useful than changing several settings at once.

Where does the translated screen appear?

Background screenshot previews require iOS 26 or later. On earlier supported versions, the workflow opens Onscreen Translate. The minimum app requirement is iOS 18.4; that is different from the requirement for the background preview experience.

You are reading a translated capture, not changing the language or buttons of the underlying app. If you scroll to new text, trigger another translation.

Back Tap only takes a screenshot

Revisit the gesture in Settings. If it is assigned to Screenshot, it will only capture an image. Assign the shortcut added during Magic Tap setup to run the translation workflow. If the shortcut is missing, reopen the app’s setup and confirm it was added to Shortcuts.

Back Tap does nothing

Check that the intended gesture is assigned, then try running the translation shortcut from Shortcuts. If it runs there, check your Back Tap assignment and gesture. If it also fails in Shortcuts, complete the app’s setup and address any permission prompt before trying again.

If the capture works but the words are wrong, use the screen translation troubleshooting guide. For a phone with an Action Button, you can also use the Action Button translation workflow.

Can I do this without paying for another app?

For occasional text, try selecting it and choosing Translate, or use Live Text on a saved screenshot. Onscreen Translate is a free download with in-app subscriptions. Check the App Store for current prices and eligibility before choosing a paid plan.
